Abstract: Bends are inevitably used in hydraulic transport. Though the local resistance caused by bends accounts for an important portion of the total flow resistance, it has not been paid adequate attention. An experimental study was made to the local resistance of bends by using the transparent two-phase flow model stand at the dredging laboratory of Hohai University, China. The observation and measurement shows that the flow structure in the bends is rather complicated and the velocity distribution is not uniform. The influence by the bends extends to the straight upper- and lower-sections, which makes the measurement difficult. A new indirect measuring technique is employed to measure the local flow resistance of horizontal bends transporting medium sand of d50=0.37mm. The characteristics of the local flow resistance under different flow conditions are analyzed. The results can be used as a reference for practice.
