Abstract: Recently in China, with the rapid development of national economy and speedup of urban construction of coastal cities, the demand for port maintenance, channel dredging and reclamation has been increasing. In this case, the operation scope of CSDs has kept expanding to deeper and further water. Therefore, domestic CSDs are facing more challenges in adaptability to operation condition, cutting force of cutter, output, dredging depth, discharging distance and so on. Being similar with developed countries, domestic CSDs are developing towards large dimensions, large installed power and automatic operation.

Marine design & research institute of china(MARIC) launched systematic research and analysis on the characteristics of large CSDs. Via absorbing design concept of the same kinds of dredgers made in other countries, MARIC has researched and designed independently several large CSDs with installed power exceeding 10,000kw (see Figure 1). In this paper, four parts will be discussed in detail in the characteristics of ship form and arrangement, type of drive, configuration of dredging system and the way of positioning.

Keywords: ship form; power; cutter; dredge pump; positioning system
