Abstract: Dredger design and the building industry in China has walked through the growing process from nothing to small scale and large scale, from simple and limited ship types to a variety of ship types with high-technology and technical innovation. The fast growth of the industry satisfied the demands from the domestic dredging market. One of the latest achievements is the successful independent development of high-efficiency large-scale hopper dredgers. Now there are nearly 1000 dredgers various types in China, 80% of which were designed and built by local shipyards. More than half of those dredgers were designed by Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC). Through looking back at the growth of MARIC’s on dredger research and development, this article presents the astonishing improvement and achievements China’s dredger industry has accomplished during this half-century.
