Abstract: Nowadays, ADCP is commonly applied in the measurement of river flow discharge and flow field. The Doppler shift between the emitting and receiving signals of acoustic is the major principal of the application in measurement. Since the suspended particles in water are the main objects that cause the acoustic backscattering (ABS), the sonar equation can be used to convert the ADCP’s ABS to the estimation of suspended sediment concentration (SSC), and therefore, the synchronous profile of flow velocity and sediment concentration can be obtained by only using the ADCP. After the 10 m Deep Navigation Channel in the Yangtze estuary was opened in 2005, the actual amount of annual maintenance has being rising every year. In the early study phase, it was found that the original construction method of dredge overflow and dredge dump is probably unreasonable. In order to know the effects of the application of the optimized new construction method, the synchronous measurements of suspended sediment diffusion field were carried out during dredge overflow and dredge dump in the North Passage of the Yangtze Estuary by using six survey boats mounted with TRDI ADCP in September 2008. The data of diffusion extension and intensity was successfully obtained, and according to the in situ experiment results, the optimized construction methods were given.
