Abstract: The depth of fairways, berths, and anchorage are continuously increasing in order to satisfy the demand of fitting mega commercial ships into the modernized port. Along with the continuous development of shipbuilding technology, the capability of the widely used screw dredge and suction dredge has been improved dramatically. At the same time, it satisfies the renovation and expansion of a modern port.
The deep soil mechanical indexes change significantly with the continuous increase of designed depth. As a result, it may cause obsession on the dredging work of the port and the waterway with advanced strict design requirements. In practice, large ships are less cost-effective and productive for the dredging work due to the long occupation of ships and related auxiliary equipments. In the meantime, the small vessels often cannot meet the design requirements. The domestic dredging market has been shrinking, while the number of dredging ships is approaching saturation. Therefore, the key point to keep the dredging companies prosperity is to enlarge the productivity of their own large-scale dredging ships. It is suggested that small ships should be transformed in order to meet the requirements of specific operational work and future projects.
