Abstract: At the end of 19th century, China bought the first chain-bucket dredger from the Netherland, which marked that China had entered the era of mechanical dredging and the China’s dredging fleet had taken the first step towards development. In the 1980s, the China’s dredging fleet developed rapidly, buying a number of large-scale dredging equipments from abroad, especially from the 21st century, with the fast and steady development of China's economy, and the port requirements expanding continuously, dredging and filling industry, the most important part of the industrial chain, grows rapidly. The dredging enterprises in China, with China Communications Construction Company LTD. and Changjiang Waterway Bureau as their representatives, have increased their investment strength in equipments, all of which have raised the dredging fleet with strength and characteristics. The ship-building mode has transferred from introducing ships from aboard to multi-mode construction. Thus, China edged into the ranks of the world's great powers in dredging. This paper, with China's development of the dredging fleet and the market changes as the main line, makes a tentative discussion of the future of China’s dredging fleet.
