Abstract: There are a number of factors that need to be taken into account when designing and operating a cutter suction dredger. One of the major requirements is an appreciation of the forces acting on the hull of the vessel. For this reason studies are carried out to determine the flow fields associated with the operation of the craft. This paper describes a numerical simulation of the flow field that was conducted for the hull of one particular cutter suction dredger based on Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation. The current drag characteristics of the numerical simulation of turbulent flow was calculated with RNG (renormalization group) k- model and FLUENT software at different current angles and velocities. The flow drag and drag coefficient were correlated. The results can be used as a reference for the design and construction of a cutter suction dredger.
