Abstract: In the past centuries dredging of rivers, harbours and canals for navigation was exclusively carried out under economic and technical considerations. However, since about three decades a comprehensive debate on environmental issues also touched the management of dredged material. As a consequence extensive research and development programmes were carried out and have greatly increased knowledge and practical experience on dredging and handling of dredged material.
Following a short review of past work, this report addresses some future lines of development in science, policies and regulations with regard to the management of dredged material. Particular reference is given to the scientific assessment of sediment quality, dredged material as "waste", contaminant sources as well as to regulations and guidance for the dredged material management. Objectives for further activities in this field and practical consequences are outlined.
