Boskalis has been awarded a contract by the Republic of the Maldives' Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure for the ongoing development of  the island of Gulhifalhu in the Maldives. The contract, which is approximately EUR 120 million, concerns the second phase of the expansion of Gulhifalhu, including climate adaptation measures.

Gulhifalhu’s development is part of a government strategy to alleviate the traffic congestion at the existing Male Commercial Harbour (MCH), the main port in the Maldives.  The development project will also serve as a climate adaptive solution that will help make this part of the Maldives resilient to rising sea levels. For the second phase of the island’s development, Boskalis will deploy a large trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) to reclaim new land using approximately 18 million m3 of sand. Other activities include rock revetment work for shoreline protection.

To mitigate any possible adverse impacts to the biodiversity in the area, Boskalis is implementing various measures, including coral relocation and measures to limit the spread of sediments in the water in combination with regular monitoring of the water quality.

Previously, Boskalis has executed several climate-adaptive dredging and land reclamation projects in Gulhifalhu including the initial development of Gulhifalhu in 2010 and 2012, and the execution of the first phase of the expansion of Gulhifalhu in 2019 and 2020. For the first phase of the expansion project, Boskalis was awarded a contract worth about EUR 45 million to reclaim an area with an initial volume of six million cubic meters of sand.
