Summary

Setting turbidity limits is a challenging task and requires a general understanding of dredging processes as well
as the surrounding environment. An integrated approach, that takes into account all crucial concepts with a
balance between protecting the environment and still allowing for dredging in a cost-effective way, is
necessary.
The various steps of a methodology, ultimately leading to a set of turbidity limits, will be presented considering:

  • the environment baseline conditions;
  • the dredging operations;
  • the sensitive receptors and their tolerance levels;
  • monitoring programmes;
  • response options.

Presenters

The webinar will be presented by members of the CEDA Environment Commission, based on the recently published paper with the same title,

  • Klavs Bundgaard, Senior Project Manager, Niras, Denmark;
  • Alessandra Feola, Senior Researcher, ISPRA - Institution for Environmental Protection and Research, Italy.

The event will be introduced by Frederik Roose, Project Co-ordinator, Research and Monitoring, Ministry of the Flemish Community Maritime Access Division, Belgium, and Chairman of the CEDA Environment Commission and it will be moderated by Roderik Hoekstra, Consultant Coastal/Offshore Engineering at Deltares, the Netherlands.

Klavs Bundgaard has a long history working with fine grained sediments and measuring techniques. First as senior hydraulic engineer with the Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) and later as team leader, senior consultant and senior project manager for SWECO and NIRAS. Klavs holds an Msc in civil engineering from DTU, specialized in coastal and ocean engineering. He was the project manager for the spill investigations for the EIA for Europe’s largest marine infrastructure project, Fehmern Belt for DHI and has been involved in numerous marine studies on cohesive sediments in Denmark and around the world. Klavs is thus an expert on modelling and measuring cohesive sediments. Klavs is also a member of the Environment Commission of CEDA.

Alessandra Feola, with B.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Hydrodynamics and Environmental Modelling, is a researcher at the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), at the National centre for the environmental coastal protection - Unit for Tides and Lagoons. She is involved in European projects related to ecological restoration and environmental monitoring and planning, with a particular interest on hydrodynamic and transport modelling. Alessandra is member of the CEDA Environment Commission.
