Kreetsand Pilot Project, Hamburg
The CEDA Environment Commission visited the Kreetsand project in October 2014.
The Hamburg Port Authority is currently creating a roughly 30ha large semi-natural shallow-water area to the east of Wilhelmsburg on the Norderelbe. The measure will have a favourable impact on both tidal flows and sediment transports: the tidal range as well as the tidal pumping effect will be reduced preventing further silting up of anabranches and side banks. The pilot project will create a valuable knowledge basis that can be relied on in the future to help achieve other tidal Elbe development goals. The project will benefit the port and simultaneously create a valuable habitat that will later become part of a larger nature conservation area on the Norderelbe.
The project won the PIANC "Working with Nature"Award at the PIANC Congress in 2013.
