CEDA - WEDA seminar in Panama - programme announced

22 December 2008

The two sister associations, the Central Dredging Association (CEDA)- serving Africa, Europe and the Middle-East - and the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) - North, Central, and South America - will organise their first joint international seminar on sustainable dredging and maritime construction. This event will take place on 2 March 2009, in Panama City.

The one-day event will be sponsored and hosted by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), the owner of one of the most exciting and prestigious hydraulic construction works, the Panama Canal Expansion Programme.  This programme will include widening and deepening of the existing canal, and the construction of 2 new sets of locks, which will double capacity and allow more traffic and longer, wider ships.

Entitled appropriately “Connecting the world through dredging”, the seminar will bring practitioners and scientists together from two continents to learn from each other by exchanging knowledge, sharing experience and discussing challenges , approaches, and solutions to meet those. The seminar programme will include presentations by experts from ACP, CEDA and WEDA. The talks will cover a broad range of topics with an emphasis on various aspects of the Panama Canal Expansion Programme.

The seminar will take place in ACP’s Ascanio Arosemena Complex, in Balboa, Panama City. A block of rooms have been reserved in the nearby Country Inn & Suites Hotel Panama Canal, with a grand view of the entrance to The Panama Canal, the Pacific Ocean, every ship that travels the Canal, and the Bridge of the Americas, which spans the entrance. Cut-off date for the special rates is 16 January 2009. After that date bookings will be subject to availability and rack rates will be applied.

The seminar will be followed by the joint meeting of the Environment Commissions of CEDA and WEDA. The two groups regularly exchange information but joint meetings are a very rare occasion. Closer links and co-operation between the commissions will be discussed. One of the areas to which considerable time will be dedicated is that of CEDA and WEDA joining forces for improved public education and outreach about dredging and maritime construction. The joint meeting of the two commissions will be hosted by Dredging International de Panama, whose general manager Hugo De Vlieger is a long-time member of CEDA’s Environment Commission.
