CEDA CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

18 November 2008

This month sees the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of the Central Dredging Association (CEDA) which was launched at the 8th World Dredging Congress in Amsterdam in November 1978. The distinguished group who were at that inaugural meeting sowed the seeds for an international dredging association that has grown into a highly respected and dynamic organization.

CEDA, together with its sister associations WEDA (Western Dredging Association) and EADA (Eastern Dredging Association), is seen as a leading source of information on all aspects of dredging and maritime construction and provides an authoritative forum for all stakeholders of dredging projects. Its membership consists of scientists, academics, engineers and practitioners, from a range of different fields, and represents more than 40 countries.

One of the young members, Loek Verheijen, is design and estimate department manager at IHC Merwede in the Netherlands, he says “CEDA helps me keep up-to-date and keeps me in contact with other professionals. It has shown me the versatility of the dredging business and it makes me proud to be a part of it!”

The CEDA Board and staff aim to ensure that Loek and his fellow members continue to have an association that they can be proud of and one that will continue to develop and challenge them. As part of CEDA’s work they are extending their range of activities, and geographical reach, with events in new areas including the Baltics and the Middle East. They are also working closely with other organizations to inform international policy and to develop training materials.

CEDA is keen to develop increase its appeal to young professionals and has set up a representative committee to ensure they have a voice. The Development Committee has been tasked with advising the Board on initiatives to better serve the needs of their fellow professionals and to promote CEDA to their peers. One such initiative is the development of CEDA’s very own wiki, the brainchild of the Development Committee. CEDAWiki, due to launch shortly, will give anyone who needs it, the potential to tap into the vast dredging knowledge base. Through the site CEDA aims to harness the collective knowledge of its diverse membership and make it available to practitioners, scientists and academics, and the general public. CEDAWiki will eventually become an integral part of the CEDA website.

The world has changed considerably since CEDA was set up and the dredging profession is constantly being presented with new and exciting challenges and opportunities. There is a growing number of diverse projects, in new areas, - some with unusual constraints. Some of them will require new innovative solutions and equipment, or new strategies for planning, design and implementation. Easy access to good unbiased information and advice will be even more critical to dredging professionals and academics as the industry continues to develop. CEDA is looking forward to helping them meet the challenges in the next 30 years and beyond.
